A vintage silver and coral crescent moon amulet with inlaid coral bead made by artisans in Tunisia.

A protective tribal Islamic amulet, these are called salhayat, or salhat, hilal (crescent) or hawafir (horseshoe) and were worn by women in Libya, Algeria, Egypt and on the Tunisian island of Djerba that has Berber, Arab, Jewish and African influence.

This kind of pendant was worn by a woman once she became a mother and so is associated with fertility and birth; they are thought to bring good luck.

Can be worn on a silver chain, hoop earring or charm bracelet.

Dimensions: 2cm x 2cm
